As part of my exploration into grid formats, and in line with my recent interest in artwork using books, I decided to print onto the pages of an old second-hand book.
Wandering around Whitstable on my birthday, I stumbled across an antique Atlas falling apart in a charity shop. I bought the book and proceeded to take it apart page by page. The maps I will save to frame up and pass on. The index became the focus for a new piece of work.
I have been developing a new print piece, using paper to print from directly (bypassing the 'plate' that forms part of most traditional relief printmaking processes). I used common A4 paper like the kind you use in computer inkjet printers. I crumpled 45 pieces of paper by hand, in different ways to create different effects.
The intention is that the outcome, when displayed in a grid, will recall the sea, and the deliberate nature of the marks made will create a sense of perspective.
I have actually ended up with 3 different print outcomes: one set of prints on the atlas index pages, another on tissue paper, and finally the crumpled paper 'plates' themselves.
I am currently experimenting with different ways of presenting each outcome. I'll post images of the finished works soon, but hope you can all make it along on 20th April (5-7pm) for a drink and to see what the UCA artists have been up to during our AA2A residencies!
