Wild Flowers

Inspired by botanical drawings, which are better than photos at conveying the particular qualities of plants, these drawings were part of an investigation into several different ways to convey such information using black and white alone, whether Rotring or pen and wash.

The plants themselves were ones that caught my eye, often on road side verges; paying attention to those plants less privileged in popular view and often regarded as weeds. The challenge was to bring out the uniqueness of each while employing some degree of stylisation; from the papery quality of poppies, the robustness and hairiness of comfrey, to the willowy form of bladder campion.

The names are indicated by rows of stars, so that the viewer appreciates the visual detail first and has to search out the identity later.
